Toys Allegedly Reveal New Spider-Man for ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse may not be out until June 3rd, 2023, but that hasn’t stopped movie tie-in toys from appearing on Target shelves. Two such toys allegedly spoil the appearance of a Spider-Man that has only been seen on-screen once before.

LAST CHANCE TO AVOID POTENTIAL SPOILERS

Naturally, we don’t know whether the toy spotted is genuine or not, but treat the following video and tweet as a potential spoiler! You’ve been warned!

According to a video posted by The Combay Collection, a Spider-Punk mask and electronic web-blastic guitar were spotted in a Target alongside other Spider-Man toys, seemingly confirming that the hero will appear in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The mask and guitar subsequently went viral thanks to a tweet by MCU Marvels highlighting them.

Background on Spider-Punk

In Earth-138, Hobart Brown is the man who takes on the Spider-Man mantle after being bitten by a spider irradiated by Norman Osborn’s illegal toxic waste dumping.

Spider-Punk is no stranger to the multiverse because not only is he a variant of Earth 616’s Hobie Brown (the original Prowler), but his only on-screen appearance to date was in season 4 of Ultimate Spider-Man, where Wolf Spider kidnapped him and several other alternate spidey’s. This version wasn’t comics accurate as his voice actor, Drake Bell, put on a Cockney accent for the character – perhaps a homage to how Spider-Punk was initially intended to be Spider-UK?

Whether Across the Spider-Verse will follow Spider-Punk in a comic-accurate fashion is currently anyone’s guess, but with Spider-Punk’s connection to the Prowler, maybe we could see the Hobart Brown variant replaced with another version of Miles’ Uncle Aaron? It would certainly be a neat way of allowing Mahershala Ali to reprise his role from the 2018 animated classic. After all, this is a multiverse, and anything is possible!
