‘Sofia The First’ Spinoff in The Works, Creator Craig Gerber Extends Deal With Disney

Sofia The First, one of Disney Junior‘s most viewed projects ever, is getting a spinoff.

Series creator Craig Gerber, who is also behind hit series Elena of Avalor and Firebuds, has extended his overall deal with Disney Junior. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the spinoff, which is in the early stages of development, is a part of his deal.

I am excited to be continuing my creative partnership with both Alyssa and Disney Branded Television. Together, we have produced three meaningful, diverse shows, and I am looking forward to broadening the scope of our collaboration while also championing new voices. It’s particularly thrilling to return to the enchanted world of Sofia the First, where it all began 10 years ago, and create a follow-up series that is just as magical.”

The Sofia spinoff would be set at Royal Prep Academy, a school for princes and princesses in the kingdom of Enchancia that Sofia and her step-siblings James and Amber attended. The news comes just before the 10th anniversary of Sofia the First’s debut on Disney Junior on November 18, 2012.

Praised for its music, animation, characters, and messages, Sofia the First received some of the highest viewership for a preschool cable television series; at one point, it became that category’s most-watched program. A variety of merchandise was influenced by the show, such as theme park rides and books. Sofia the First was nominated for 11 Daytime Emmy Awards, including two wins, and received the 2014 Annie Award for Best General Audience Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Preschool Children.
