Gina Carano has filed a lawsuit against The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm for her firing off The Mandalorian and the now-canceled Rangers of the New Republic.

In a complaint filed on Tuesday in a California federal court, Carano alleges she was fired for voicing right-wing opinions on social media. She is also seeking a court order that would force Lucasfilm to recast as Cara Dune, as well $75,000 plus Punitative damages.

What makes this more interesting is X leader Elon Musk is footing Carano’s legal bill. Making good on a promise that he would cover any legal fees if users of the platform are discriminated against on his platform.

In a statement from The Hollywood Reporter, X’s head of business operations Joe Benarroch said, “As a sign of X Corp’s commitment to free speech, we’re proud to provide financial support for Gina Carano’s lawsuit, empowering her to seek vindication of her free speech rights on X and the ability to work without bullying, harassment, or discrimination.”

To give some context, in 2021, Carano shared an Instagram post that compared “hating someone for their political views” to the persecution of Jews during the Holocaust and included an image taken during the Lviv pogroms. Many critics interpreted the post as comparing American conservatives to Jews in Nazi Germany.

Shortly afterward, Lucasfilm stated that Carano was no longer employed by the company, saying that “her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable”. Her posting of a series of tweets in which she mocked the use of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States was also cited by Lucasfilm as well as her repeated belief of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election.
