It’s been nearly 5 years since we last heard anything about Disney’s planned live-action remake of Sword in the Stone. While it seemed like the film was on the studio’s list of priorities along with its other live-action adaptations, new details have come out that confirm that it’s not.

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo was first tapped to direct the project in 2018. This week, he’s got a fantasy film of a different kind coming out on Netflix titled Damsel. In an interview with Collider about that project, Fresnadillo spoke candidly about why Sword in the Stone may never happen.

When asked about a status update on the film, Fresnadillo told the outlet, “I was attached a long time ago, and I prepped a lot for Disney for that movie. I don’t know exactly what happened, but the studio decided to hold the project.”

He added that the project was in “a holding situation,” and that he has not idea what’s going to happen with it.

“It’s a great story. I would be so keen to make it if they decided to greenlight the project,” he concluded.

Based on Fresnadillo’s comments, it seems like the film is the furthest thing on Disney’s mind. While it would be nice to see it happen, with so many other studio projects in development, realistically it may have just gone the way of so many Hollywood projects.

The news comes just a day after it was revealed that Oscar winner Sarah Polley dropped out of directing the studio’s live-action Bambi adaptation. With live-action versions of Lilo & Stitch and Moana coming up, it’s hard to say whether Disney is done with those adaptations. Only time will tell.

Are you sad about Sword in the Stone being put on hold? Sound off below!

Released in 1963, Disney’s animated adaptation of Sword In The Stone chronicles King Arthur’s humble beginnings. As an orphaned child, Arthur, who was then known as Wart, wants to help his foster brother, Kay, succeed in becoming a knight. While helping Kay train, Wart stumbles upon a cabin belonging to Merlin, a bumbling but talented wizard. Merlin does his best to convince the boy that he is bound for greatness, and when Wart and Kay travel to London to attend a jousting contest, they learn that Merlin was right.
