Disney’s live-action adaptations of their beloved animation feature films are still on the horizon. Some have major hits like Alice in Wonderland, The Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Lilo & Stitch but some failures like Dumbo and Snow White didn’t work out. That doesn’t stop The Mouse House as they have more to come and their next one is the fan-favorite long-haired princess film, Tangled.
Tangled has officially begun production earlier this week in Spain and what can be more fun than to get some behind the scenes looks since their filming on location. It’s been said this adaptation will be filmed in 8 months both in Spain and the United Kingdom, making it the longest Disney live-action production yet.
Set photos and videos have surfaced on their internet with the construction of Rapunzel’s tower and confirmation that the fan-favorite Maximus the horse will appear in the movie.
The construction of Rapunzel’s tower looks both massive and practical as it is being built in Valdegovia, Spain. The tower has a stone structure to give it that medieval fairy tale aesthetic and like the animated film, it has some green moss attached to it and you can see a little bit of it on top.

The tower serves a huge purpose to Rapunzel’s story where she lives in this tower along with her Mother Gothel ever since she was a little girl and can’t leave the tower. Of course her Mother can leave and when she returns, Rapunzel lets down her 70 feet long blonde hair to let her inside the home.
Another behind the scenes look, is the fan-favorite white horse, Maximus. Maximus is a non-talking horse in the original animated film, who’s a palace horse that was enemies with thief Flynn Rider and even becomes companions with him, Rapunzel and her chameleon, Pascal who hasn’t been confirmed yet.
From the look of Maximus, they’re doing a combination of having a real horse along with some puppetry and CGI. Usually Disney live-action remakes go both ways with how the animals are translated from animation to CGI/live-action. They would either make them just live-action animals like Belle’s horse, Philippe in Beauty and the Beast or just CGI animation like Cinderella’s mice in the 2015 remake, Abu the monkey and Rajah the tiger in 2019’s Aladdin remake. It looks like they’re doing both and we shall see how they translate in the final version.
Tangled stars Teagan Croft and Milo Manheim as Rapunzel and Flynn Ryder. Kathryn Hahn will be the villainous Mother Gothel and Andor star Diego Luna recently joined the cast in an unknown role.
The Greatest Showman and Better Man director Michael Gracey is directing this adaptation along with a script written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.
As of now, there’s no release date confirmed for Tangled, but it’s long ways ahead as it’s currently filming in various locations in both Spain and the UK.
