Hours after Jamie Lee Curtis posted an image reuniting her with Lindsay Lohan, Disney is officially greenlighting the highly anticipated Freaky Friday sequel.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has tapped Late Night and Welcome to Chippendales director Nisha Ganatra to direct the project. Production is expected to begin in Los Angeles this Summer.
Curtis and Lohan are both currently in talks to reprise their roles from the original.Elyse Hollander is penning the script to the sequel. Andrew Gunn, who produced the 2003 movie, is producing along with former Disney exec Kristin Burr. It is unclear whether the feature will be released theatrically or debut on Disney+, both Hocus Pocus 2 and Disenchanted saw success on the streamer.
The franchise encompasses various iterations, including the original theatrical release featuring Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, a made-for-television version, a theatrical remake, a Broadway musical, and a Disney Channel Original Movie adaptation. At its core, the franchise revolves around the concept of body-swapping between parents and their children, initially portrayed as having contrasting views and struggling to find common ground. However, as each installment unfolds, they undergo a transformation, developing mutual respect and gaining deeper insights into each other’s perspectives.
