If there’s one thing that the National Treasure films taught the world, it’s that the best treasure is not just worth searching for. It’s worth waiting for too. Although Disney’s National Treasure series was canceled last year (after only one season), the franchise looks to be far from buried.
Earlier this year, you might recall producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealing that a script is definitely in the works for a third National Treasure film. Thanks to a new interview, however, we have even more information about the film.
Speaking with the National Treasure Hunt podcast, writer Ted Elliott spoke for the first time about the script he’s been hired to work on for the third film.

In the surprisingly revealing interview, Elliott claims that a first draft of the script has officially been complete.
He teases that the story will feature familiar faces, including Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates – and that the dynamic between him and Riley (played by Justin Bartha) will be different this time around. Perhaps this may even explain Cage’s absence from the series?
Speaking of the series, Elliott confirms that the series is canon; however, he would not elaborate if characters introduced in the show would play a role in the franchise’s next chapter.
Additionally, Elliott teased the film’s next heist as the “weirdest ever.” That is, compared to stealing the Declaration of Independence and kidnapping the President. He also confirmed that none of the online theorists had correctly identified the film’s MacGuffin.

According to our own sources, although a third film has yet to be greenlit, the studio does plan to release a new film “in some fashion.”
Now, we just have to wait and see what comes next.
So far, the franchise has proven to be a financial success with the two original films grossing over $800 million at the worldwide box office on a $230 million budget.
