While the Tom Hardy-led Venom films have ended, Sony/Marvel aren’t quite done with the character just yet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio has tapped Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the duo behind last year’s surprise horror hit Final Destination: Bloodlines, to direct and produce an animated Venom pic.
Oh Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, who were involved in the Venom films, will probably be on board to produce the film, although since the project is still in its infancy, none of these things are certain at this point.
Tom Hardy is also rumored to be on board in some capacity. It is not clear if he would be producing or if he would return to voice Venom as well, given that he starred in the recent live-action films from the studio as Eddie Brock, the human who is bonded to the black gooey alien symbiote in the Venom films.
There is no writer attached to the project, although Sony Pictures Animation is opening up a writers room to work on a script or scripts.
At the box office, the live-action Venom trilogy proved to be a major global draw. Venom led the charge with an impressive $856 million worldwide, including $213 million domestically, becoming the highest-grossing installment of the series. Its sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, followed with a pandemic-era total of $507 million globally, roughly $214 million of which came from North America. Most recently, Venom: The Last Dance brought in about $479 million worldwide, including approximately $140 million domestically, marking the lowest total of the three, though the trilogy as a whole has amassed more than $1.8 billion globally.
