Star Wars is finally heading back to theaters — and all eyes are now on The Mandalorian & Grogu.
According to new early box office projections reported by Deadline, the upcoming Lucasfilm film is currently tracking for a potentially massive opening weekend, with estimates reportedly landing between $80–95 million domestically. If those numbers hold, it would mark one of the biggest theatrical openings the franchise has seen in years and could signal a major comeback for Star Wars on the big screen.
The film is especially important for Disney and Lucasfilm because it represents the franchise’s first theatrical release since Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker back in 2019. Since then, Star Wars has largely shifted its focus to Disney+, where The Mandalorian became an instant cultural phenomenon and helped launch a new era of streaming storytelling for the galaxy far, far away.
Now, Din Djarin and Grogu are making the jump from streaming to theaters — and Disney is clearly hoping audiences are ready to follow.
Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu continue the story fans have followed over multiple seasons of the hit Disney+ series. Pedro Pascal is expected to return as Din Djarin alongside Grogu, while the film also reportedly features Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White in undisclosed roles.
What makes this project even more fascinating is the pressure surrounding it. Over the last few years, Star Wars has become one of the most debated franchises in entertainment. While shows like The Mandalorian and Andor earned major praise from fans and critics, other projects have divided audiences, leading many fans to wonder what the future direction of Star Wars should actually look like.
That’s part of why this movie feels so important.
For many fans, Grogu remains one of the biggest breakout characters Disney has created under the Lucasfilm banner. Merchandise sales, social media engagement, and fan reactions continue to prove just how popular the little green Force user still is years after his debut. Bringing Grogu to theaters may ultimately be Disney’s strongest play to reignite mainstream excitement for Star Wars films.
And honestly… it feels like Lucasfilm knows this movie needs to hit.
The theatrical experience alone could be enough to draw longtime fans back into theaters. Seeing large-scale Mandalorian action, space battles, and Grogu moments on the big screen instead of at home could become a major selling point for audiences craving a true Star Wars event again.
At the same time, there’s still plenty of skepticism surrounding the project. Some fans remain cautious after recent divisive Star Wars releases, while others question whether a Disney+ series can successfully transition into a must-see theatrical blockbuster. The biggest challenge may simply be convincing casual audiences that this isn’t “just another streaming spinoff.”
Still, early tracking numbers suggest interest is absolutely there.
Whether The Mandalorian & Grogu becomes the next great Star Wars phenomenon or another divisive chapter for the franchise, one thing is certain: this movie may end up shaping the future of Star Wars films for years to come.
And if Grogu helps bring Star Wars fully back to theaters… Disney may have found the franchise’s future after all.
