Taika Waititi is arguably one of the busiest directors in Hollywood. Star Wars is one of the biggest franchise in the world. So what happens when you combine the two? Well, we’ll all have to wait a little while longer to find out.

Just a few weeks ago it was revealed that Waititi’s Star Wars film would be the franchise’s next to be released theatrically; however, it wasn’t entirely clear when Waititi would be able to carve out the time to make it…until now.

In a new interview with The Wrap, the Academy Award-winning director told fans not to expect the film to go before cameras as soon as this year.

“I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits,” he said. “During that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

Unfortunately, Waititi couldn’t give an estimate as when he thought production might start. Given that Lucasfilm still has a target release date for December 2023, it doesn’t seem likely like his film will make that deadline.

A few months ago, you might remember reports of creative differences forcing Jenkins’ previously announced Rogue Squadron to get put on the back-burner. Since then there have been no updates on any of the other projects, particularly the ones announced years ago from Rian Johnson or Kevin Feige.

But it’s not like Star Wars fans are starving. Just last week the highly anticipated Obi-Wan Kenobi prequel spin-off series aired its finale. Next up will be the 12-episode series Cassian Andor prequel spin-off in August, followed by the third season of The Mandalorian in February of 2023, Ahsoka, and The Acolyte soon after.

Waititi’s next film, Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters next Friday, but he’s also got another film titled Next Goal Wins slated to come out later this year too.
