RUMOR: Ryan Coogler Is A Front-Runner To Direct ‘Secret Wars’
The next two ensemble Avengers films aren’t slated to come out for another 3 years, but that has not stopped any of the wheels from turning behind the scenes at Marvel Studios.
Shortly after plans for Phase 6 were unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con, the news that that Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton would be helming the first of the two films, Avengers: Kang Dynasty, hit the web. Because the second planned film, Avengers: Secret Wars, is scheduled to hit theaters six months later, speculation began to run rampant about about who might be Marvel’s choice to direct it.
While it’s still unclear who will helm the project, a new rumor courtesy of The Weekly Planet Podcast could indicate a clear front-runner.
In the latest episode of the podcast, co-hosted by Nick Mason and James Clement of the YouTube channel Mr. Sunday Movies, Clement alleges that a reliable source close to him Ryan Coogler is one of Marvel’s top choices for the role. He says, “[Coogler] is at the very least one of the directors currently in talks for Secret Wars.”
He adds, “This person says [he’s] a fairly obvious choice. And it is. That makes sense.”
It does make sense that Coogler would be entrusted with such a project, especially after the monumental success of Black Panther. Similar to Cretton, he’s demonstrate the ability to balance characters, worlds, and action on a massive scale.
