Disney and Lucasfilm have announced that the animated anthology series Star Wars: Visions will return for a third volume in 2025. This announcement was made during the first day of Disney’s two-day Content Showcase in Singapore.
The upcoming volume will feature nine new animated shorts produced by various Japanese animation studios. Notable studios involved include David Production, Production I.G., Trigger, Kinema Citrus, and Kamikaze Douga.
When it first premiered in 2021, Visions was a daring move by Lucasfilm, showcasing a series of non-canon animated shorts from different Japanese studios, each presenting unique animation styles. This freedom from traditional constraints allowed for innovative and imaginative takes on the Star Wars universe, earning acclaim from both fans and critics.
The inaugural volume of Visions was released on Disney+ in September 2021. This season featured nine episodes created by various Japanese animation studios, including Kamikaze Douga, Studio Colorido, Geno Studio, Trigger, Kinema Citrus, Production I.G., and Science Saru. Volume one received widespread praise from critics, achieving a remarkable 98 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 81 percent score on Metacritic.
The second volume of Visions premiered on Disney+ in May 2023, showcasing episodes created by a diverse array of international studios. This included Aardman from the U.K., El Guiri from Spain, Cartoon Saloon from Ireland, Punkrobot from Chile, Studio Mir from South Korea, Studio La Cachette from France, 88 Pictures from India, D’art Shtajio from Japan, as well as Lucasfilm from the U.S. and Triggerfish from South Africa/Ireland. Similar to its predecessor, volume two received outstanding reviews from critics, achieving a flawless 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 88 percent score on Metacritic.
