For the last few years we’ve been spoiled by live-action Disney remakes. But it looks like Walt Disney Studios might be rethinking its approach for future films. A few weeks ago you might recall that we reported on a rumor about the live-action Hercules project being retooled into a project about Hades. Now, it appears that there’s another villain-inspired project in the works at Disney too. This one is about a character you might not expect.
According to industry insider Daniel RPK, there are currently plans to make an origin story about the Queen of Hearts from “Alice in Wonderland.” However, RPK notes that the project will not be connected to the studio’s recent live-action Alice in Wonderland films.
He adds that Julia Hart, the director of both of Disney’s Stargirl films, is expected to write and direct the project.
It’s unclear when the film plans to shoot or when the studio will officially announce it.
Now, this would not be the first time Disney made a film about a classic villain. Just look at the successful Maleficent and Cruella films. But the fact that the studio is continuing on this path means that they are interested in changing up their formula and do not simply want to continue to produce carbon copies of their animated classics.
Additionally, in recent years, Disney has built quite a massive fanbase with Serena Valentino’s “Villains” book series. Each story uniquely chronicles a classic Disney fairy tale from the perspective of a respective villain.
Because this is a rumor, and because there seems to be so much going on – or not going on – with this project, we urge you to take it with a grain of salt.
But if it is true, we’d love to hear your thoughts down below!
