It came as a surprise to many that, this year at D23, there was no mention of Disney’s long-awaited live-action remake of Hercules. But one new rumor might actually explain why.
According to industry insider Daniel RPK, Walt Disney Studios has quietly retooled the upcoming film. In a Patreon post shared Wednesday afternoon, RPK alleged that the film will no longer be entirely about Hercules.
In fact, he states that the movie is now expected to be told from the perspective of Hades. Similar to Maleficent, the movie will retell the story of the original Disney animated film, but from Hades’ point of view.
If that isn’t surprising enough, RPK also reports that the film is currently slated to be called Hades.

Aside from Maleficent, exploring the villain’s POV isn’t a completely radical idea for Disney. But it’s also not the most successful. Should we remind you of the indefinitely shelved Beauty and the Beast prequel series about Gaston and LeFou?
Additionally, in recent years, Disney has built quite a massive fanbase with Serena Valentino’s “Villains” book series. Each story uniquely chronicles a classic Disney fairy tale from the perspective of a respective villain. Funny enough, just last year, Hades’ book was published.
Now, per RPK, the Russos are still producing. But at this point, it’s unclear if Guy Ritchie is still attached to direct. Late last year, we heard that he was no longer going to direct. RPK also reiterated that info earlier this year.
However, the time the Russos gave an update (earlier this year), they said they were still waiting for a script from Ritchie.
Because this is a rumor, and because there seems to be so much going on – or not going on – with this project, we urge you to take it with a grain of salt.
But if it is true, we’d love to hear your thoughts down below!
