Despite recent rumors of retirement, Kathleen Kennedy does not appear to be going anywhere.
In a new interview with Deadline, the legendary Hollywood producer debunked claims from earlier this week about her leaving Lucasfilm.
In the interview, Kennedy claims that she has been working on a succession plan for a couple years.
“I want to just say loud and clear, I am not retiring,” she told Deadline. “I will never retire from movies. I will die making movies. That is the first thing that’s important to say. I am not retiring. What’s happening at Lucasfilm is I have been talking for quite some time with both Bob [Iger] and Alan [Bergman] about what eventual succession might look like.”
When asked if she would be stepping down by the end of the year, like the previous report suggests, she said, “We really don’t know at this stage. There’s so much going on.”
However, she did affirm that when it was her time to go, it would be “100 % her decision.”

In the interview, Kennedy also gave a little more insight into some of the projects that are in active development at the studio.
“I’m producing Mandalorian the movie right now,” she said. “And I’m also producing Shawn Levy’s movie, which is after that. So I’m continuing to stay at Lucasfilm and looking very thoughtfully with Bob and Alan as to who’s stepping in.”
In regards to a report from last year about Simon Kinberg producing a series of Star Wars films, Kennedy happily confirmed that he is still hard at work.
“We’re absolutely rolling fast and furiously. That has gone exceptionally well, and he’s literally going to script as we speak,” she said. “We’ll see something probably around June,” she added, praising his work on Fox’s X-Men films.
In regards to the previously announced James Mangold project, Kennedy told the outlet that it was also still in development. She says that she understood how busy he was working on A Complete Unknown. “I like to wait for people that I think are passionate and really good to step into Star Wars,” she added.
She also provided a long-awaited update to Taika Waititi‘s Star Wars project, saying that she hopes it still happens, but she knows he’s also very busy. “I keep waiting for Taika and he is working with another writer now. He’s so busy,” she said. “I love him, I think if we ever do get a script from Taika, it’s going to be fantastic. I already saw a first act that I loved, but tying him down it’s tricky.”
One project notably absent from the conversation was the previously announced sequel to The Rise of Skywalker starring Daisy Ridley‘s Rey. The last we had heard, the script was undergoing another rewrite. Time will tell if it does get made though.
It feels like forever since we have had Star Wars on the big screen but if there’s anything worth taking away from this interview, it’s that the studio still has big plans for the future. Let’s just hope they are closer to reality than the the galaxy far, far away.
