It’s been an interesting year for The Muppets.
First they had their iconic 3D attraction at Hollywood Studios removed (and were relocated). Then they announced their Broadway debut last month!
To the average fan, the future of the iconic characters seems unclear. After all, Disney has struggled to find a proper way to make the characters relevant in recent years. However, it appears there are plans in place to bring them back – albeit, on the small screen.
A few weeks ago, we at The DisInsider heard rumblings about a potential “Muppet Show” reboot at Disney+. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find out any other details or get additional confirmation from other sources so we held off on running a story.
But this week, a post from the Film & Television Industry Alliance revealed that a pilot for a project literally called “The Muppet Show” was set to enter production this week. That’s not all, as it appears the latest project might be produced by Seth Rogen!
While Rogen’s name may come as a surprise, this actually wouldn’t be his first time involved at the studio, as he previously voiced Pumba in the live-action Lion King movies and has been working on a project about the Disney icon Figment for years!
While we’re still working on getting additional details, we thought this was enough info to substantiate what we had originally heard. That is why we are reporting it now.
Kudos to the outlet ToughPigs for finding the FTIA’s post!
If true, this would be the first Muppets series since 2023’s short-lived Muppets Mayhem, and the first series featuring the original cast since 2015’s primetime The Office-style sitcom The Muppets.
As the title hints, it could very well be a variety show in the vein of the original Muppet Show from the 1970s.
