I recently visited Disneyland Paris for the first time in what felt like forever and was overjoyed to see a number of new entertainment offerings amongst other things such as a first trip to Avengers Campus. One of the highlights from my trip was Together: a Pixar Musical Adventure, and I knew I had to share my thoughts upon my return home, due to the show’s absolute energy and life created through its impeccable storytelling, great music and sensational stage design.

Walt Disney Studios Park is currently home to two theatre shows, Mickey and the Magician, a truly wonderful addition to the resort’s roster of entertainment, which can be found in Animagique Theater and Together: A Pixar Musical Adventure, found in Studio Theater.

The premise of the show is fairly simple – we meet Charlie, a child who is passionate about music, and dreams of conducting the orchestra for her school’s gala. On the eve of the concert, she loses the sheet music and relies on Woody and the rest of the Toy Story gang to go on a journey through the worlds of Coco, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo and Up.

MUSIC – THE KEY ELEMENT

One of the best parts about this show is there is a live orchestra playing along with the show, with various members being highlighted during specific songs and each having their own moment to shine on stage.

Having music be this show’s niche was a great choice and really allows for a good level of variety around Disneyland Paris within its live entertainment offering.

The current trio of shows are a great mix, with the upcoming Alice in Wonderland show in the Studios park sure to add to it, though I predict it may not be up to the standard we’ve become accustomed to.

As for the current shows, Mickey and the Magician provides your conventional Broadway needs, The Lion King: Rhythms of the Pride Lands offers the show we know and love but gives it a gymnastics and this is more focused on music. A really good mix of entertainment and flavours for fans of these franchises to enjoy.

The music itself is an absolute joy to hear, using some of my favourite scores whilst also featuring a new piece of song, ironically titled “Together” to accompany the show as its main theme, ending in it being performed in a dance number with Woody, Buzz and friends.

Having the orchestra have a role in the show and feel as if they’re just as important as the characters on stage was wonderful, reminding us that they are just as important as the Pixar characters in this show.

STAGE DESIGN – SCREENS USED EFFICIENTLY

Whilst Disneyland Paris’ other show Mickey and the Magician opts for a single digital screen on its main cyclorama, the staging in Together: a Pixar Musical Adventure introduces various digital walls, some stationary and additional smaller ones which are able to be moved horizontally allowing for a number of the show’s sequences to play out seamlessly.

One of the best uses of the screens comes during the Up sequences where Carl Fredricksen’s house is seen navigating its way through the clouds onscreen before the screens move to reveal a practical set of the same house on-stage. Elsewhere, the screens are used to provide colourful and vibrant backgrounds for the Coco and Finding Nemo segments, both benefitting from the digital cyclorama.

Though we were watching the show from an angle, and not exactly straight on for the performance, some unaligned perspectives didn’t harm the effectiveness of the screens, though I can see why some people would have issues with their eyelines not syncing up with the moving backgrounds.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DISNEYLAND PARIS’ ENTERTAINMENT

As previously mentioned, a new show awaits the Walt Disney Studios Park, titled “Alice & the Queen of Hearts: Back to Wonderland“. Set to debut in the newly renamed Theater of the Stars, the show promises to offer the beloved Disney film in a new format, bringing trampolining and BMX bikes to Wonderland – sure to be an interesting show…

I would be happy to see both TOGETHER: A Pixar Musical Adventure and Mickey and the Magician stay within the Studios as both are very strong shows, however, with the latter being the older of the two – I would hope Disney make sensible decisions whether or not they can update some segments of the show to introduce new scenes/characters to refresh it.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Disneyland Paris continues to enchant visitors with its diverse entertainment offerings, and TOGETHER: A Pixar Musical Adventure stands out as a vibrant addition to the resort’s lineup. From its energetic storytelling to its captivating music and sensational stage design, the show immerses audiences in a delightful journey through beloved Pixar worlds. The incorporation of a live orchestra adds depth and variety to the experience, allowing the show to be a shining example of the creativity and joy that define the Disneyland Paris theatrical experience.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
